Monday morning discussion group.

Have you ever opened your Sunday paper and spotted something you wanted to think about in more depth? Or perhaps you listen to news on the radio and wonder what on earth they are talking about. If you want to explore something topical with others, why not join our discussion group?

We meet on the second and fourth Monday (forthcoming dates below) 11.00am to noon.

 Come and join us!   One meeting each month we consider whatever has caught our collective eyes in the news, the next we have a planned discussion, led by different members.

The group has had lively sessions on a variety of topics in the first half of 2026.

The first covered the increasingly important subject of artificial intelligence (AI). It started with a brief overview of the last 60 years or so, moving from a very slow and arduous computer programming age to the current times, where AI is already showing massive improvements across a wide range of industries and services. The risks were also considered, especially in the absence of multinational regulations, and the fact that AI capabilities and speed are doubling every 4 months. 

Another session was devoted to “home remedies and science”. Of particular note was the fact that current science has validated the positive effects of cranberry juice, honey and chicken soup! Unexpectedly, human urine proved to have numerous beneficial properties. Historically it was perceived as sterile in nature, and this meant it had value for cleaning wounds at a time when clean water was scarce. Its chemical properties rendered it useful in certain industries and its monetary value increased and it became an article of commerce. Poor people would sell it by the potful. Hence the expression “p… poor” and “ so poor that they didn’t have a pot to “p… in”.

We then had a session devoted to voting in elections, which started with a presentation of certain facts, both UK and international. The subsequent discussion centred on different voting systems and the benefits and weaknesses of each. It also covered compulsory voting, as practiced in Australia and Belgium among others. 

The latest session was open to any topics raised, based on recent events. The hottest subject was the Novak murder in Southampton and the issue of two tier justice. Others were the limits of parental responsibility for crimes of children, and a consideration of NEETS ( not in employment, education or training) and how the education system was influencing the increasing numbers.

The next session is scheduled for July 6th at 1100 in the downstairs meeting room at the Methodist church, when the topic will be “What makes you laugh?”.
