Members of the local history group usually meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the upstairs room at the Holmfirth Methodist Church but from time to time visits are arranged to museums and other places with an interesting history. Most of the visits, shown in the list below, are in the Kirklees area but occasionally we venture further afield. There are approximately 30 active members of the group with about 20 usually attending the monthly meeting.
Upcoming topics are mentioned at the meetings and confirmed by email a few days before. The group has a WhatsApp page which is used to co-ordinate travel arrangements including shared lifts and to exchange other information of use or interest to group members
Amongst the topics covered in recent meetings are hospitals in or near the Holme Valley, Cinemas and Theatres of Huddersfield, the Man who invented Cats Eyes by his niece, Woodsome Hall, the Holmfirth Floods, Huddersfield Town and several local murders! Speakers are often well known in the areas and have included David Hinchliffe, Christine Leverage, David Cockman, Vincent Dorrington and Stuart Hartley.
Members meet for tea or coffee and biscuits from 10.00 am with the talk beginning at 10.30.
