In past have covered topics like use of scientific calculator, different methods of long multiplication (see exercise on Russian multiplication)percentages and even algebra which pleasantly surprised many in group.

3 + 4 x 2 Is answer 14 or 11

Russian multiplication

Example 

 26 x 32

Method

Represent numbers as 2 columns 

Halve first column ignoring any remainders and double second column 

Keep doing this until number in first column is 1

             26.            32. X

              13.             64

               6.              128. x

               3.               256

               1.                512

Then cross out any lines where number in left column is even (marked by X  above)

Finally add remaining numbers in right hand column (ie 64 + 256 + 512)

This gives you correct answer of 832  Believe it or not !!
